My device is lagging - why is this?
Maybe you have an old phone that lags significantly, or perhaps a newer model that lags occasionally. Whatever the age or stage of your phone or tablet, you are likely to experience some lagging at some stage throughout its life.
Lagging can often be caused by a variety of simple issues which can be rectified in some quick and easy steps. In this article, we will walk you through some of these troubleshooting solutions.
1. Software Update
One of the most common causes of lagging are bugs within your device's software that need patching. With each software update released including patches for bug fixes, it is important to keep you phone or tablet up to date.
With this being the leading cause of lagging, it is the first thing to check when searching for a solution. To do so, go to your software update page in settings and check to see if you have any pending updates.
If there is an update ready to be downloaded and installed, complete these steps via the prompts given and then see if the lagging has been resolved!
2. Device Storage
As more files are stored on your device, the storage becomes more full. As your phone or tablet storage becomes more full, the device will have to process more and more data, slowing it down and leading to lagging.
Thankfully, there is an easy way to resolve this issue and reduce any lagging. Simply backup your device and then remove any unnecessary data from it. This will free up space and allow the device to process information quicker and with more ease, reducing lagging.
3. Background Running Apps
Many people do not realise, but if apps are not closed fully, they continue to run and process information in the background. This uses up processing capacity of your device and means that lagging can occur if they are not cleared regularly.
To clear apps, the process will vary slightly between different devices and operating softwares. For iOS devices, it will be a simple double tap of the home button, or swipe up for Face-ID models before clearing each app. For Android devices, it will vary depending on each phone, but many have a button on the home screen also that you can tap before clearing each app.
If you are experiencing lagging, it is important to clear your apps on a frequent basis. It is recommended you do this at least 3-5 times daily minimum to keep your phone processing efficiently.
Summary
If you follow all of these steps, it is likely that you will have resolved that lagging issues that you have been experiencing. These are the most common fixes and solutions to any lagging on your devices.
However, if you are still experiencing lagging following the completion of all of these steps, we advise completing a factory reset on the phone which will reset all settings and software that may be causing any issues within the phone.
